Giant Swede on Wheels: Volvo EM90 - the Luxury Space Wagon for Affluent Commuters

Forget about the squares-on-wheels image of Volvo, the new EM90 is here to change that. This towering Swede is Volvo's first-ever van, built in collaboration with its sister brand Zeekr, catering to the luxury electric MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) segment.

When you slide into the plush interior of the Volvo EM90, you'd think you're stepping into a penthouse apartment or a high-end furniture store — all while in a vehicle. The 5.21-meter behemoth boasts a cloud-soft air suspension, a gentle steering system, and a warm, understated Swedish design complete with light colors and a noble restraint.

No doubt, this is Volvo's answer to China's growing trend of luxurious space travel, where the elite are ditching traditional limousines like the S-Class or S90 for taller vehicles and expansive legroom.

Loading Up and Relaxing

The EM90 is no solo effort; it's based on the 009 platform from Zeekr. That means it sports an 116 kWh battery, giving it an impressive 738 kilometers of range (according to the Chinese cycle) and quick charging powers of up to 360 kW. But don't get too excited about the numbers; in stop-and-go traffic, comfort and deceleration matter more than speed.

Under the hood lies a single electric motor churning out 272 PS and 343 Nm of torque, delivering a dynamic driving experience that passes the Jiangsu Highway's cloverleafs without breaking a sweat. However, with a weight of 2.8 tons, the power figures might seem modest to some. But judging by its relaxed cruising capabilities, it makes for a fantastic chauffeur-driven experience.

Back Seats and Relaxation

Upfront, you'll find a luxurious seat that's heaven for the back, but the party doesn't stop there. The rear seats offer reclining positions for optimal relaxation and an onboard infotainment system that's bound to impress. The table that slides out of the armrest? Talk about airport lounges on wheels!

But here's the best part: the chair is for the second row passengers only. The third row boasts a bench seat, still comfortable but a tad more ordinary. But with a 3.21-meter wheelbase, even the rear passengers have more room than in most other Volvos.

Packing and Loading

Storage is a breeze with the EM90. Fully occupied or not, the trunk space remains at 535 liters. Need more room? Fold the rear seats and you get a whopping 2,376 liters of cargo space! So, if you need to transport more IKEA furniture, this van's got you covered. Just don't expect much in the frunk as it's a measly 29 liters.

Unfortunately, the Volvo EM90 currently remains a China-exclusive. It costs around 100,000 euros, making it Volvo's priciest model. But as the luxury market looks for chauffeured vehicles that offer comfort and space, it's just a matter of time before the EM90 rolls its way westwards. So, stay tuned for more!
