Unleashing Whoop 5.0 and MG: A Game-Changer in Fitness Tracking

After a week of tantalizing social media posts, Whoop has finally dropped the bomb on their latest innovation, the 5.0 device, along with the "MG" version that's geared towards medical-grade fitness enthusiasts. Members can upgrade to the new 5.0 for a mere $49 fee or opt for one of the three enticing membership tiers: One, Peak, or Life.

Whoop, the screenless fitness tracker that bagged a stellar four-star rating in my review of the 4.0 model, is all about integrated fitness and recovery tracking, and it excels in handling strength training. Unlike other fitness trackers, Whoop is subscription-based, with the hardware serving as a bonus for membership holders.

Embracing the Future: What's in Store with Whoop 5.0

Sporting a sleek new look, the 5.0 device is claimed to be a slimmer 7% compared to its predecessor, but don't expect your old straps and accessories to fit – longstanding members with more than 1,500 recoveries will receive a "Milestone collection" box filled with extra bands. Boasting a whopping 14-day battery life, the 5.0 packs a new power pack for wireless charging during wear. Members of the Peak and Life tiers will receive the wireless power pack, while the budget tier will make do with a wired charger.

Underneath the hood, the 5.0 sports a 60% faster processor and "enhanced sensors" compared to the 4.0. However, medical-grade extraordinary happens with the MG version.

Whoop MG (Medical Grade): Beyond the Fitness Realm

Enter the MG Whoop, a device that scores big in the medical world. Akin to an Apple Watch or Fitbit, the MG device performs ECG readings from your wrist. This coveted device comes with a Whoop Life membership, the top-tier subscription at $359/year.

Find Your Fitness Level with Whoop's Membership Tiers

The three new membership tiers – One ($199/year), Peak ($239/year), and Life ($359/year) – cater to a wide range of fitness enthusiasts.

Whoop One ($199/year)

This budget-friendly membership provides a wired charger, a "CoreKnit" band, and access to the basics of Whoop's functionalities. Peeling back to this level will strip you of a few features like the Health Monitor and Stress Monitor.

Whoop Peak ($239/year)

The most familiar level amongst current Whoop users, Peak offers similar features to the single subscription level of the 4.0. If your subscription renews without a chosen tier, you'll end up on Peak. Alongside the subscription, you'll get the new Healthspan feature, which offers insights into your "Whoop age" and "pace of aging," complete with recommendations to improve those metrics.

Whoop Life ($359/year)

The pinnacle of Whoop's offerings, Life comes with the MG instead of the 5.0 hardware. This membership includes everything in Peak, including the Healthspan feature, plus ECG readings and Whoop's latest feature: an estimate of your blood pressure. Be advised that you'll need to calibrate the blood pressure feature with cuff readings to start utilizing it.

Got the Whoop Blues?

Memberships will continue to function with the 4.0 device, and even non-upgraders will still gain access to all the features that Peak membership offers, including the forthcoming Healthspan feature. If you opt not to upgrade, your membership will automatically be rolled into Peak.

Updated on May 8, 2025, at 3:30 p.m., to reflect that the age metric is officially dubbed "Whoop age," not "fitness age."
