Working Remotely in Spain: A Possibility?

In 2023, the country introduced a Spain digital nomad visa, allowing remote workers to reside in the country for up to five years before applying for permanent residency.
This visa caters to freelancers, startup owners, entrepreneurs, and employees of foreign companies who have been working remotely for at least three months. To be eligible, applicants must have a valid passport valid for at least 12 months and prove they are a freelancer with foreign clients, a startup owner or entrepreneur, or an employee of a foreign company located outside of Spain and have held their position for at least one year. Additionally, applicants must meet the income requirement, which is double the national minimum wage in Spain, or €2,762 per month for individuals, €3,797 per month for couples, and an additional €346 for each child dependent applicant.
If applicants do not have a degree, they must prove they have worked in their industry for the last three years. Furthermore, the company or business must have been established at least one year ago outside of Spain.
Digital nomads find Spain's public transportation system convenient, making it easier to navigate the country's large metropolises, beach towns, countryside villages, and sun-soaked islands. Remote workers in Spain also report a better work-life balance and improved health.
However, it is essential to note that working remotely in Spain with a tourist visa is not formally authorized. Digital nomads who wish to stay in Spain for longer than a tourist visa allows can apply for the digital nomad visa and live in the country for 12 months to three years. EU citizens can stay longer without a visa but must register if the stay exceeds 90 days.
