World Humanoid Robot Games Kick Off in Beijing

The World Humanoid Robot Games, a groundbreaking event in the field of robotics, took place in Beijing from August 14-17, 2025. The competition, held at venues like the National Speed Skating Oval used in the 2022 Winter Olympics, attracted around 30 robot teams from countries including the United States, Brazil, Germany, Portugal, and China.

The robots, developed by teams worldwide, are AI-powered and fully autonomous. They are equipped with advanced visual sensors that enable them to locate the ball and navigate the field with ease. One of the standout teams participating was the Shanhai Team from China Agricultural University, runner-up of the RoboCup Humanoid Robot Soccer World Cup in Brazil 2025.

The robots are programmed to watch human movements and then go through thousands and tens of thousands of iterations in a simulation environment. This method allows the robots to learn to dribble, kick, and shoot the ball like humans. In addition, they can recover after a fall and resume the game, demonstrating remarkable agility and resilience.

The games encompassed around 20 events, including various sports disciplines, with robots showcasing their complex movements. The competition aims to accelerate international cooperation in robotics and serve as a real-world proving ground to advance humanoid robot development amid technological competition, particularly between China and the United States.

The event was preceded by the RoboLeague, held earlier in June, which made headlines for its innovation. The World Humanoid Robot Games represent a major step in humanoid robotics development and are set to pave the way for future advancements in this exciting field.
