Powered by AMD's Z2 range, Microsoft claims that Gears of War: Reloaded runs steadily at a stunning 1080p, 60 FPS on the Xbox Ally X, thanks to its advanced NPU. There's even speculation that new technologies like AI frame generation could further boost performance.

But with great power comes a great cost.

So far, Microsoft hasn't revealed the exact price tags for these beauties. A lot of chatter is swirling about the potential price points. We decide to weigh in with our own speculations and analysis about what to expect.

Recently, Xbox insider Extasis hinted that the base Xbox Ally has been slapped with a suggested price of $499, and the Xbox Ally X, the pricier model, at around $799, with an October launch window. Now, while we can't confirm the October launch just yet, we do have reasons to believe that Extasis' price suggestions are pretty spot on, despite Microsoft's reluctance to commit. But, is this too good to be true?

The reluctance to commit to a price could be linked to the ongoing trade and tariff drama in the United States, where policies are notoriously unpredictable and ever-changing.

The Xbox Ally is being produced in collaboration with Taiwanese firm ASUS, which primarily manufactures its products in Taiwan and China, but also has facilities in Mexico and Czechia. The ongoing trade tensions have prompted ASUS to warn its investors about the potential for higher prices as a result of the trade wars.

Buckle Up for Some Sticker Shock: Xbox Ally X - Too Optimistic or Just Right?

I'd be lying if I said I didn't think the $799 price for the Xbox Ally X was a little optimistic. Speaking on the Xbox Two Podcast, system engineer and PC gaming handheld expert Cary Golomb suggested the Z2 Extreme Xbox Ally X could fetch a price between $899 and $999.

But what if Microsoft is planning to subsidize the Xbox Ally X somehow? It's undeniable that the Xbox PC app is a significant feature, which might help Microsoft to recoup their margins from software and Game Pass service sales. After all, the Xbox Ally is essentially just a Windows PC at its core. But if users eschew the Xbox PC store in favor of Steam, Microsoft's hardware margins become crucial.

The Xbox Ally base model is equipped with a Z2A APU, which, on paper, matches the performance found in the $549 Steam Deck. I'd be willing to bet that the $499 price range being suggested for the base model could easily become a reality, given the Steam Deck comparison.

However, keep in mind that the Windows 11 overhead could impact the real-world performance when compared to the Steam Deck, thanks to SteamOS' gaming-optimized capabilities. Microsoft is currently working to further optimize Windows 11 for PC gaming handheld scenarios, but the performance gains might not quite bridge the gap with the SteamOS.

As someone deeply invested in the Microsoft Xbox ecosystem, both in console and PC, the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X exude the aura of devices destined for me. I currently use the Lenovo Legion Go, but the enhancements both in design and technical aspects make the Xbox Ally incredibly appealing.

But, with the sticker price still a mystery, I'm left to wonder whether my wallet can handle this new obsession.

Microsoft's daring new Xbox strategy encompasses both first-party Xbox console hardware and "Designed for Xbox" third-party hardware, manufactured by traditional Windows OEMs like ASUS. There's immense potential here, but it requires both user adoption and support from PC game developers to truly take off. And, as the saying goes, you can't have one without the other.
