Yahoo Mail Reduces Free Storage to 20GB, Encourages Paid Plans
Yahoo Mail, once known for offering massive free storage, has made a significant shift in its strategy. The tech giant has reduced its free email storage from 1TB to 20GB, aligning itself more closely with competitors and aiming to monetize its service more aggressively.
This decision, announced in late August 2025, has frustrated many long-time users who have stored extensive email histories over the years. Once the new limit is reached, users cannot send or receive emails until they delete messages or upgrade to a paid plan, although they still have access to their mailbox to manage storage.
Yahoo offers two new paid plans: 100GB for $1.99 per month and 1TB for $9.99 per month. For those seeking more storage, Yahoo Mail Plus, priced at $5/month, offers 200GB and a few extra features, but still includes ads. To have an ad-free experience, users must pay more than $5/month.
In an effort to help users manage their storage during this transition, Yahoo is rolling out real-time storage tracking, sorting filters for large emails, and an attachment manager. These tools are designed to make it easier for users to clear up space in their mailboxes.
The reduction in free storage puts Yahoo more in line with competitors, such as Gmail, whose free storage allowance is less than Yahoo's new 20GB limit, but covers email only. However, Gmail offers more value through integration with Drive and Photos. Gmail's ad experience is also less cluttered compared to Yahoo Mail.
Yahoo Mail, which commands around 225 million users globally, is under pressure to monetize more aggressively. Whether users continue to use Yahoo Mail or switch to alternatives will likely depend on their willingness to pay and their tolerance for ads.
The shift towards monetizing more aggressively is a significant change for Yahoo Mail. In the '90s and early 2000s, Yahoo email accounts were popular, but the tech landscape has evolved, and Yahoo must adapt to remain competitive.
