Yelp has launched a new AI-powered video feature that creates short, engaging videos showcasing user-generated content about restaurants and nightlife spots. These videos, reminiscent of TikTok-style content, are now available in the Yelp home feed on the iOS app, with Android support expected soon.
The AI-generated videos are created by stitching together user-uploaded photos, video clips, and written reviews. OpenAI generates the scripts, ElevenLabs provides the voice synthesis, and Amazon Transcribe supplies captions. The result is a series of narrated slideshows that offer a quick, vivid overview of a place without requiring extra effort from users or businesses.
The videos are designed to provide an engaging and dynamic summary of venues, potentially increasing patronage by showcasing appealing aspects from the community’s own shared experiences. For instance, an AI video featuring the Italian restaurant Cesarina suggests visiting the "pasta station" and offers an introduction to the eatery, followed by a dessert and main dish showcase.
However, it's important to note that users and businesses currently cannot opt-out of having their uploaded photos or reviews included. Yelp monitors the content and allows reporting of any offensive or inaccurate material through a menu in the video display.
Yelp started testing this system last year, and the quality of the uploaded content affects the likelihood of it appearing in the feed. As the feature is still being tested, it may be rolled out more widely in the future.
