Yemen's First Large-Scale Solar Plant Brings Power to 170,000 Homes
Yemen, the Middle East's least electrified country, has taken a significant step towards renewable energy with the unveiling of its first large-scale solar power plant. The 120-megawatt Aden Solar Power Plant, funded by the United Arab Emirates, became operational in July 2024, providing electricity to between 150,000 and 170,000 homes daily.
The plant's inauguration marks a turning point in Yemen's electricity crisis, which has lasted nearly three decades due to fuel shortages and war damage. The financing for this project was provided by international development aid funds, with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) playing a notable role in supporting renewable energy projects in developing countries, including Yemen.
Solar energy has been steadily increasing in Yemen's total electricity generation. In 2023, it accounted for 10% of the country's total output. Looking ahead, Yemen plans to double the capacity of the Aden Solar Power Plant in a second round scheduled for 2026.
The Aden Solar Power Plant is a testament to international cooperation in addressing Yemen's electricity crisis. With the plant now operational, Yemen continues its transition towards renewable energy, aiming to further alleviate electricity shortages and reduce its dependence on fossil fuels.
