Zopa Bank Unveils Growth Intentions in Manchester, in Concert with Mayor Andy Burnham
Zopa, the digital banking company with over 1.5 million customers, has announced its decision to establish a regional office in Manchester. The move comes as the Greater Manchester Combined Authority expressed delight at the choice, recognising the city's growing status as a significant tech and financial hub outside of London.
The decision to set up shop in Manchester was driven by the city's thriving tech ecosystem and deep talent pool. Zopa's new office, located at Dalton Place, aims to grow to over 500 staff in the future. The initial team will consist of more than 50 employees, with roles in retail finance, product, engineering, and specialist operations.
The University of Manchester, a major academic institution in Manchester, is particularly notable for its role in training the talent pool that Zopa is interested in. Other nearby institutions and colleges may also contribute, but the University of Manchester is the key university known for such talent development.
The acquisition of Rvvup is expected to treble the size of Zopa's embedded finance business within two years. In September 2025, Zopa acquired Rvvup to offer merchants multi-channel checkout experiences across all payment methods using AI.
Zopa's flagship bank account, Biscuit, launched in June 2025, quickly becoming the UK's best current account for everyday value and amassing 100,000 customers. The company holds a full UK banking license, meeting the same regulatory standards as traditional banks, and deposits are protected up to £85,000 by the FSCS.
The event was attended by guests from the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, Manchester City Council, the city's universities, Fintech North, and more. Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, praised Zopa's investment in the city and welcomed the bank to Manchester. Katie Gallagher OBE, CEO of Manchester's inward investment agency MIDAS, commended Manchester's ecosystem for being one of the best places for fintechs to grow and thrive, particularly due to its strengths in cyber, AI, data, and talent.
Joe Manning, Managing Director of MIDAS, comments on the investment in Manchester delivering significant economic impact for the local economy. The scaling of the Manchester location supports Zopa's vision to become the home of money for customers, offering effortless experiences and valuable products.
In 2024, Zopa was voted the UK's Best Personal Loan Provider and Best Credit Card Provider at the British Bank Awards. The company anticipates significant growth for the 2025 financial year, following its strong performance in the first half of the 2021 financial year, where it tripled its profitability, with £3.4bn in gross lending and £5.4bn in retail deposits.
Currently, Zopa is hiring for an additional 50 roles in its Dalton Place-based office. The company looks forward to contributing to Manchester's growing tech and financial scene and providing opportunities for local talent. Manchester, with its fast-growing tech and financial sector, offers an ideal environment for Zopa's continued growth and success.
